RESUMO

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection triggers inflammatory processes with the consequent production of hypochlorous acid (HOCl), monochloramine (NH2Cl), and protein-derived chloramines. As the therapy for eradicating H. pylori is partially based on the use of tetracycline, we studied the kinetic of its consumption elicited by HOCl, NH2Cl, N-chloro-n-butylamine (NHCl-But, used as a lysine-derived chloramine model), and lysozyme-derived chloramines. In the micromolar concentration range, tetracycline reacted rapidly with HOCl, generating in the first few seconds intermediates of short half-life. In contrast, a slow tetracycline consumption was observed in the presence of high NH2Cl and NHCl-But concentrations (millimolar range). Similar chlorinated products of tetracycline were identified by mass spectrometry, in the presence of HOCl and NH2Cl. These results evidenced that tautomers of tetracycline are pivotal intermediates in all reactions. In spite of the low reactivity of chloramines towards tetracycline, it is evident that, in the concentration range where they are produced in a H. pylori infection (millimolar range), the reactions lead to oxidation and/or chlorination of tetracycline. This kind of reactions, which were also observed triggered by lysozyme-derived chloramines, could limit the efficiency of the tetracycline-based therapy.

RESUMO

In this work we present a simple method to reconstruct the complex spectral wave function of a biphoton, and hence gain complete information about the spectral and temporal properties of a photon pair. The technique, which relies on quantum interference, is applicable to biphoton states produced with a monochromatic pump when a shift of the pump frequency produces a shift in the relative frequencies contributing to the biphoton. We demonstrate an example of such a situation in type-II parametric down conversion allowing arbitrary paraxial spatial pump and detection modes. Moreover, our test cases demonstrate the possibility to shape the spectral wave function. This is achieved by choosing the spatial mode of the pump and of the detection modes, and takes advantage of spatiotemporal correlations.

In real-time quantum feedback protocols, the record of a continuous measurement is used to stabilize a desired quantum state. Recent years have seen successful applications of these protocols in a variety of well-isolated micro-systems, including microwave photons and superconducting qubits. However, stabilizing the quantum state of a tangibly massive object, such as a mechanical oscillator, remains very challenging: the main obstacle is environmental decoherence, which places stringent requirements on the timescale in which the state must be measured. Here we describe a position sensor that is capable of resolving the zero-point motion of a solid-state, 4.3-megahertz nanomechanical oscillator in the timescale of its thermal decoherence, a basic requirement for real-time (Markovian) quantum feedback control tasks, such as ground-state preparation. The sensor is based on evanescent optomechanical coupling to a high-Q microcavity, and achieves an imprecision four orders of magnitude below that at the standard quantum limit for a weak continuous position measurement--a 100-fold improvement over previous reports--while maintaining an imprecision-back-action product that is within a factor of five of the Heisenberg uncertainty limit. As a demonstration of its utility, we use the measurement as an error signal with which to feedback cool the oscillator. Using radiation pressure as an actuator, the oscillator is cold damped with high efficiency: from a cryogenic-bath temperature of 4.4 kelvin to an effective value of 1.1 ± 0.1 millikelvin, corresponding to a mean phonon number of 5.3 ± 0.6 (that is, a ground-state probability of 16 per cent). Our results set a new benchmark for the performance of a linear position sensor, and signal the emergence of mechanical oscillators as practical subjects for measurement-based quantum control.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dioxins are well known for their persistence in the environment. PCBs can be found in the residential environment long after the use of these chemicals in domestic products and industrial processes has ceased. Dioxins have been assessed in Australia as being of very low concentrations. Despite concerns about residential dust as a source of human exposure to persistent chemicals, there has been limited testing of PCBs and dioxins in dust in Australia. As part of an assessment of maternal exposure to a variety of persistent toxic substances, we analysed 30 residential dust samples from a variety of geographical settings for their dioxin and PCB concentrations. PCBs were found in most samples, the median and range concentrations (pg g(-1)) of dominant congeners of PCB were as follows: PCB118 (315; <35.0-29 000), PCB105 (130; 14.0-16 000) and PCB156 (440; <5.00-2800). Dioxin concentrations were generally low with median concentrations for the total sum of dioxin-like polychlorinated dibenzodioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) of 3.75 pg g(-1) each. There was a very high percentage of non-detects. Concentrations of both PCBs and dioxins were low compared with most studies reporting residential dust concentrations internationally. Age of dwelling was the only factor observed to influence both PCB congener concentrations and dioxin isomers in multivariate regression analyses. No other housing or sociodemographic variables, including proximity to industry, were important predictors in multivariate linear regression models.

BACKGROUND: Medical treatment in patients suffering from Parkinson's disease is very difficult as dose-finding is mainly based on selective and subjective impressions by the physician. OBJECTIVES: To allow for the objective evaluation of patients' symptoms required for optimal dosefinding, a telemonitoring system tracks the motion of patients in their surroundings. The system focuses on providing interoperability and usability in order to ensure high acceptance. METHODS: Patients wear inertia sensors and perform standardized motor tasks. Data are recorded, processed and then presented to the physician in a 3D animated form. In addition, the same data is rated based on the UPDRS score. Interoperability is realized by developing the system in compliance with the recommendations of the Continua Health Alliance. Detailed requirements analysis and continuous collaboration with respective user groups help to achieve high usability. RESULTS: A sensor platform was developed that is capable of measuring acceleration and angular rate of motions as well as the absolute orientation of the device itself through an included compass sensor. The system architecture was designed and required infrastructure, and essential parts of the communication between the system components were implemented following Continua guidelines. Moreover, preliminary data analysis based on three-dimensional acceleration and angular rate data could be established. CONCLUSION: A prototype system for the telemonitoring of Parkinson's disease patients was successfully developed. The developed sensor platform fully satisfies the needs of monitoring patients of Parkinson's disease and is comparable to other sensor platforms, although these sensor platforms have yet to be tested rigorously against each other. Suitable approaches to provide interoperability and usability were identified and realized and remain to be tested in the field.

RESUMO

We report a tunable single-photon source based on a single trapped ion. Employing spontaneous Raman scattering and in-vacuum optics with large numerical aperture, single photons are efficiently created with controlled temporal shape and coherence time. These can be varied between 70 ns and 1.6 micros, as characterized by operating two sources simultaneously in two remote ion traps which reveals mutual and individual coherence through two-photon interference.
